Grammy-winning composer Augusta Read Thomas has garnered acclaim for the dramatic, spontaneous quality of her work and her masterful use of instrumental color. She has amassed a following among orchestras, chamber ensembles, soloists, vocalists, and music enthusiasts with her talent for producing unique creations of vibrant, bold fantasy in sound. In this lecture, listeners will be invited to discover the meanings in Thomas’s music as she shares her sketches, manuscripts, and methodology for composing. The 16th person ever to hold a University Professorship at the University of Chicago, Thomas will also discuss how the University of Chicago’s investments in the arts affect her work and the broader artistic community.

Thomas’s compositions have been widely published by G. Schirmer and performed by such renowned organizations as the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where Thomas was composer-in-residence. She has served as board chair of the American Music Center and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
